The gradual revival of Miami’s music scene continues this week with the announcement that the Blue Note Jazz Club of New York has partnered with local concert promoter The Rhythm Foundation for a summer concert series.

Arturo Sandoval, Robert Glasper, Big Freedia and the Soul Rebels will kick off the series in June with special guest Cimafunk. Concerts will be held throughout the month at the North Beach Bandshell, which continues to limit venue capacity and follow social distancing guidelines.

“Blue Note is actively seeking outdoor spaces in New York City and beyond,” Steven Bensusan, president of Blue Note Entertainment Group, said in a statement. “We have yet to find the right opportunity to meet our needs locally, making the partnership with North Beach Bandshell in Miami Beach, which has created a very safe environment for socially distanced performances, the perfect time for Blue Note Jazz Club. to continue to present live music. ”

Rhythm Foundation Director James Quinlan said the North Beach Bandshell salutes the club’s “40 years of experience with the leading jazz artists of our generation.”

The series is certainly getting off to a good start, with two shows a day for each act. Sandoval will give four shows on June 5 and 6, while Robert Glasper (June 12) and Big Freedia and the Soul Rebels (June 26) will give two shows each.

Opened in 1981, the Blue Note Jazz Club is a regular haunt for emerging jazz, soul, hip-hop, R&B and funk artists in Greenwich Village. The club also defends the preservation of the history of jazz while encouraging progression and innovation.

The North Beach Bandshell itself bounced around better than most venues in South Florida, thanks to its open-air space. During the height of the pandemic, the bandshell continued to regularly broadcast live shows, and when the restrictions were lifted, it quickly brought audiences back – with many restrictions. Promoter Gideon Plotnicki brought in Dumpstaphunk for a sold-out show in February, and tickets for back-to-back Big Gigantic shows from May 6-7 are already gone.
