HEP Kids Jazz Music & Fun for Families

Launched in 2012, HEP KIDS offers a day of fun and music for families with children ages 2-12, with an emphasis on jazz. This year, the HEP KIDS event will take place on

Saturday June 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

at the Hochstein School of Music and Dance. Media partners are WXXI and Kids Out & About.com.

HEP KIDS is designed to provide families with the opportunity to spend quality time together while listening to jazz music, learning instruments, creating musical crafts, presentations by community partners and much more for a very reasonable ticket price (max. $10/family)

There will be 3 half-hour programs and activities in Hochstein Theater Featuring: The Three Bellas Jazz Trio, Harley School’s Terry Smith with bassist Kieran Hanlon and Hochstein’s Music Lab Director Chris Witulski. Each program has elements of interaction with the public.

Other performances throughout the building include: a Rhythm Drum Jam with the Expressive Arts Department of Hochstein and the Hochstein Jazz Ensemble led by Mambo King’s Richard DeLaney.

Other activities include:

  • Photo booth with crazy props by BRL Entertainment

Brick oven pizzas from Dave’s Pizza, drinks, fruit and snacks will be available for sale on site.

The creative movement becomes jazzy! with Adrianne Santucci 11:00-11:30

Kids will have fun dancing creatively to jazz and becoming the instrument they want to be!

All that Jazz Dance with Cheryl Johnson 12:30-1:00

Syncopated rhythm is a characteristic of jazz music expressed physically in jazz dance through the elements of isolation, low center of gravity, improvisation and high energy. Join internationally acclaimed percussive dance artist Cheryl Johnson in a physical exploration of syncope.

Mini-course on the fundamentals of music 12h00-12h30

Our Music FUNdamentals classes are a great way to develop your child’s brain and get them involved in music from an early age. Swing down the hall and enjoy a mini course full of energy and fun.

Stories and Sounds of Jazz with Harley School’s Terry Smith and bassist Kieran Hanlon 10:45-11:15

Come experience the elements of jazz found in popular children’s literature! Move, dance, dance and play as the stories and sounds unfold in the words on the page. Children will interact with text, create sound effects through singing and body percussion, improvise and more based on story prompts. The following books will be read: Max found two sticks, written and illustrated by Brian Pinkney; hip cat, written by Jonathon London, illustrated by Woodleigh Hubbard; The Jazz Fly, written by Matthew Golub, illustrated by Karen Hanke; and jazz baby, written by Lisa Wheeler, illustrated by R. Gregory Christie.

Music Lab Dance Party on stage 11h45-12h15

Our Music Lab at the Hochstein School offers students new ways to create their own music. Join the director, Christopher Witulski, creating dance floors from scratch using just a laptop and a microphone. Watch your beats live on the big screen! Get ready to get funky.

Join the members of our Expressive Arts department Monica Brown, Amanda Monotonous and Erin Bowlingalso known as jazz trio The Three Bellas, as they kick off a high-energy, interactive session involving movement, singing and active music-making.

Hochstein Jazz Ensemble 10:45-11:30 a.m.

Hochstein Jazz Combo led by Mambo King’s Dick DeLaney will perform a variety of jazz classics.

Yoga Fun with Rochester Yoga Preschool 11:45am-12:15pm

Join Rochester Yoga Preschool for yoga, movement to music, and even a yoga story! All ages are welcome!
