Hermann’s Jazz Club seeks donations during the Omicron wave

One of Victoria’s iconic concert halls is reaching out, asking for financial help from its loyal supporters and patrons.

Hermann’s Jazz Club has been presenting local, national and international blues and jazz musicians for over 40 years in BC’s capital.

Recent COVID-19 restrictions have forced the jazz club, which has a restaurant and a paid room license, to operate at 50% capacity.

Reduced capacity and soaring COVID-19 cases mean in-person ticket sales have been decimated of late, leaving the club scrambling to keep the lights on.

Hermann’s has been broadcasting live concerts by donation since the start of the pandemic, as well as live audiences, as permitted by BC health regulations.

But the club say sources of income have dwindled in the past two months and government subsidies are not enough, leaving management no choice but to look to the public for help.

“This is our first and only call during the pandemic,” says Ashley Wey, manager and artistic director of Hermann’s Jazz Club.

“This wave has hit us the hardest and what we’re really asking for is support to help us with operational capital to help pay staff and get food to serve.”

Wey says the appeal is a short-term measure and will help musicians keep working

“We’re all very worried about artists and how they’re going to pay their rent, but venues have also been hit so hard that it’s really hard to carry on.”

Hermann’s Jazz Club is run by the Arts on View Society, which was incorporated in December 2016 with the aim of preserving the iconic jazz club.

The company’s goal is to enhance the public’s appreciation of jazz music through live performances for all ages.

Wey started coming to the club at the age of nine with her father, who was friends with Hermann, and later became a musician and artist herself, traveling the world.

She continues to perform at and run the club, saying it is like her second home – and for the community, a cultural centre.

The cause is close to his heart.

“We don’t plan to close, but this is a cry right now from us asking the community for support and donations to keep us going.”

If you would like to support Hermann’s Jazz Club and the musicians who perform there, donations can be made through the Arts on View Society.
