New York jazz music reopens
NEW YORK, June 29, 2021 / PRNewswire / – In July and August, the New York Jazz Workshop will reopen its state-of-the-art facilities to the public for in-person jazz programs. NYJW Celebrates Reopening In-Person Classes with Stellar Lineup of Three and four day summer intensive (for adult participants 17+) and Jazz camp for teens (for 12-16 year olds). After enduring such an incredibly difficult year of the pandemic, we couldn’t be more excited to come together again to learn, laugh and play music.
The intensive summer series starts with “La folie du saxophone” on July 16-18, conducted by three of today’s most influential saxophonists: Chris plays, Tony malaby, and Sam Newsome (hosted by Marc Mommaas). Each day will be led by a different faculty member offering their unique take on improv, sound, technique and more.
This summer offers not one but of them opportunities for guitarists to work with Kenny wessel and Nate radley in the Intensive “Hang Guitar” (July 23-25 and 23-25 ââAugust). Either of these special three-day crash courses is the perfect setting for guitarists to refine their improvisation, harmony and technique.
NYJW’s intensive programming offers incredible programming for singers of all skill levels. michelle walker, in the same way Olivia foschi and Jocelyn Medina, lead Vocal training 1 (beginner / intermediate level) from July 26 to 28 and vocal training 2 (intermediate / advanced level) on August 20-22. Topics include melody, breathing exercises, technique, jazz repertoire approaches, and improvisation.
Marc Mommaas, the co-founder of the school, will lead the first Jazz Improvisation on July 29-August 1, where musicians will sharpen their skills and expand their musical vocabulary with the drummer Tony Moreno and vibraphonist Marc Sherman. Topics for this intensive include ear training, rhythm and composition.
August 6-8 is “The Keys” Intensive for all pianists / keyboardists, taught by world class pianist combo Amina Figarova, Angelique Sanchez, and Jacob Bags. Topics include reading, aural training, technique, solo piano, composition styles, and improvisation.
Intensive “Rhythm for all” from August 9 to 11 will open your ears to a variety of rhythmic approaches, such as swing, Afro-Cuban and Latin grooves, polymeter, weird time signatures, and more. Directed by Marc Mommaas, Darrell Green, and Dave ambrosio, this program is open to all instrumentalists and singers.
For Brazilian music lovers, August 12-15 brings intensive brazilian music with pianist Vitor GonÃ§alves and percussionist Vanderlei Pereira. During this intensive, students will perform the music of Jobim, Pascoal, Pixinguinha, in addition to learning rhythms like choro, bossa nova, baiao, samba, maracatu and xote.
Drummer Vito Lesczak and a special guest will lead the second Intensive Jazz Improvisation from August 26-29. The intensive covers many styles of composition as well as ideas on melody, harmony and rhythm.
The Intensive Jazz Composition * will be led by Marc Mommaas and special guest Alain Ferber to August 27-28. The intensive will answer questions on how to avoid compositional ruts and cover topics such as form, melodic considerations, and melodic rhythm. * Online only.

Teen SUMMER CAMP (12-16 years old)
Our Teen Summer Jazz Camp allows teenage students to perform and learn jazz in a friendly, informative and amusing! NYJW is delighted to host four sessions of the Teen Jazz Camp:
Jazz improvisation is the ultimate form of musical expression, and with the help of New York professionals, students will learn to apply jazz theory, aural training and ensemble playing to all styles of music. Our camp is run by a group of seasoned and dedicated educators, all materials meet admission requirements as stated by LaGuardia Community College, Frank Sinatra High School and similar programs.
