Beats & Pieces Big Band Ten: A new album from Manchester-based fourteen-piece big band Ben Cottrell – all in lowercase in the title – marks ten years of the award-winning ensemble’s formation. Cottrell and his fellow musicians keep a young, fresh and contemporary edge in their compositions and concerts. ten is available on Ben Cottrell’s Efpi Records, and the band will be performing at Middlesbrough Jazz Weekender on Friday, October 19. A preview of the Middlesbrough Jazz Weekender will appear in next week’s column.


Dennis Plays Miles: Tomorrow Noon Noel Dennis plays the music of one of his trumpeter heroes, Miles Davis, at Durham’s Gala Theater. The Gala’s monthly jazz concerts are invariably sold out, so check ticket availability on 03000 266 600.

The New Century Ragtime Orchestra – all twelve – returns to the Darlington New Orleans Jazz Club on Saturday, November 3, to continue their musical roller coaster through the music of “Jazz Age”. 12:30 p.m. St Augustine Parish Hall, Larchfield Street, Darlington.
