Over the past 100 years or so, The Congress Hotel has survived structural fires, seen Prohibition come and go, and hosted everyone from U.S. Senators to John Dillinger and his criminal gang. Today, a new addition to the historic landmark merges a New York nightclub with a borderline mezcal bar.

Shana Oseran, owner of the Congress Hotel with her husband, Richard Oseran, and music programmer Arthur Vint are teaming up to open a jazz club in the hotel’s former Copper Hall space. The Century Room, with a grand opening scheduled for March, will host weekly jazz shows, serve local mezcals, beers and wines, and offer a step back in time.

“We have the plaza and the Club Congress, which is where it all started, and now moving into that third genre, it’s really exciting,” Oseran said. “Where in town, or anywhere, can you find a place that has three different concert halls?”

The Copper Hall was a banquet hall along the southwest side of the building with windows looking out over the hubbub of Congress Street. With a reduction in banquets and similar events due to the pandemic, Oseran was looking for a new concept to fill the vacant room when she started talking with Vint.

“While there are many great jazz musicians and great jazz shows in Tucson, there hasn’t been a single house to host concerts or tours,” Vint said. “There are a lot of musicians touring across the country, and these bands usually stop touring in Phoenix and go home. By building a world-class club and stage, we hope to bring people to come to Tucson on their West Coast tours.

Vint grew up in Tucson and graduated from Rincon High School.

He also worked at the Congress Hotel as a night shift receptionist before earning a bachelor’s degree in jazz performance from William Paterson University in New Jersey and a master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music. From there, Vint established a career as a freelance drummer, composer, and bandleader throughout New York City beginning in 2007.

Vint says he plays everything from jazz and salsa to pop and rock, and has performed at some of the world’s most renowned venues and appeared on numerous albums. He has also starred on screen in Boardwalk Empire, The Knick and John Wick.

After performing at the plaza in April 2021, Vint floated the idea of ​​turning The Copper Hall into a space inspired by the Village Vanguard jazz club in New York, where Vint worked as a head bartender.

Now, after 15 years in New York and the last year and a half bouncing between New York and Tucson, Vint is returning to his desert home full-time to teach jazz at the University of Arizona and work with Oseran as a as music programmer for La salle du siècle.

“The Vanguard is sort of the mecca of jazz clubs, and all the other jazz clubs point to The Vanguard,” Vint said. “It was a point of reference in the design stages, but we did a lot of detail work to make the space feel like it had been there for 100 years. he Congress hotel has just celebrated its 100th anniversary, it also refers to the factory of the century – we are an agave bar with over 40 agave spirits – and we also hope it will be there for 100 years. you walk in, it feels like it’s always been there.”

The former Copper Hall foyer is now a soundproof stage. The new entrance is through 100-year-old vestibule doors at the corner of Congress St. and Fifth Ave. Doors open to the bar on the left and wooden shutters along the south windows facing Congress St. There are booths, bar stools and 75 table seats with a clear line of sight to the stage which surrounds the far right corner of the room.

“You feel like you’ve arrived at this beautiful and important space,” Vint said. “I always like bars and places where you walk in and feel like you have to lower your voice a bit out of respect, and I think it can have that effect on people.”

Although the space as a whole is new, elements of the past are interwoven inside.

“All those brown, chocolate, delicious curtains that used to surround the whole banquet hall are now reconfigured as the backdrop of the stage on all three sides,” Oseran said.

“We’re going to be open this Friday and Saturday to start, but we plan to expand our days and hours as we get an idea of ​​how it will fit.”

The inauguration is scheduled for the first weekend of March. Until then, they have started holding preview concerts every week on Friday, February 4. The first show sold out, so they added a second seat, a common practice in New York nightclubs. The first service is at 7:30 p.m. and the second at 9 p.m.

The first to perform in this new space was the Homero Cerón Latin Jazz Quartet on Friday, February 4. Cerón has spent over 40 years as principal percussionist of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and plans to perform a mix of originals and Latin classics. It turns out that Cerón was also Vint’s first drum teacher.

On Friday, February 11, Susan Artemis and her quartet perform “Love Songs from the Dark Side of the Lounge” for a special Valentine’s Day weekend concert.

The Howard Alden Trio will take the stage on Friday, February 18 to perform Alden’s favorite compositions throughout his career. Alden is a world famous guitarist from New York who recently moved to Phoenix.

Latin music legend Eddie Palmieri will celebrate his 85th birthday at Bird Country Jazz Club next week! Known as one of the best pianists of the past 60 years, the 8x GRAMMY prize award-winning conductor, arranger and composer is one of the most respected artists of his generation. A NEA Jazz Master, his playing skillfully merges the rhythm of his Puerto Rican heritage with the complexity of his jazz influences: Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner as well as his older brother, Charlie Palmieri. Palmieri will celebrate its 85th anniversary at Bird Country Jazz Club to Tuesday, January 11 through Saturday January 15th.

Palmieri’s parents emigrated from Ponce, Puerto Rico to New York City in 1926. Born in Spanish Harlem and raised in the Bronx, Palmieri learned to play the piano at an early age, and at age 13 he joined the his uncle’s orchestra, playing timpani. His professional career as a pianist took off with various groups in the early 1950s. In 1961, Palmieri formed his own group, La Perfecta, which featured an unconventional front line of trombones rather than the usual trumpets in Latin orchestras. This created an innovative sound that mixed American jazz with Afro-Caribbean beats, surprising critics and fans alike.

His unconventional style would surprise critics and fans alike with the 1970 release titled Harlem River Drive. This recording was the first to merge what was classified as “black” and “Latin” music into a free-form sound that encompassed elements of salsa, funk, soul and jazz. In 1975, Palmieri won the first of eight GRAMMYS for Best Latin Recording for The sun of Latin music.

Palmieri has received numerous honors including the Eubie Blake Prize (1991); Most Exciting Latin Performance, presented by the BBC in London (2002); the Yale University Chubb Fellowship, usually reserved for international heads of state, but awarded to Palmieri in recognition of his work in building communities through music (2002); Harlem Renaissance Prize (2005); Jay McShann Lifetime Achievement Award (2008). Christian McBride: “Living at Village Vanguard” – Stick and move

It wouldn’t really be one of my lists without a little bit of Christian McBride. It’s not difficult either, considering the volume of output from the legendary bassist.

This time around it’s another live from famous New York nightclub, The Village Vanguard, but with his band called Right inside. Saxophonist Steve Wilson, pianist Peter Martin, vibraphonist Warren Wolf and drummer Carl Allen together form a swing powerhouse with McBride.

My favorite track is the last in the series, Stick and move, because it offers a solo swap between bass and drums that will keep you on the edge of your seat for a good 5 minutes straight.

There is perhaps no better example of a hardscrabble survivor in the hardscrabble town of Flint than the Golden Leaf Jazz Club, which celebrated its 100th anniversary on October 3. Tucked away just south of downtown on Harrison Street, invisible to traffic just a block away on the main thoroughfare of Saginaw Street, the Golden Leaf is the latest icon of the once thriving Floral Park neighborhood, a small but vibrant black community that included hair salons, grocery stores, drugstores, and a theater – and the Golden Leaf, which bills itself as a jazz club, but also enthusiastically provided a showcase for soul music, funk, hip-hop and rhythm and blues.

Mirroring what too often happened to black communities in New York City, Detroit and elsewhere, urban development – in this case the construction of the I-475 freeway, a commercial loop allowing I-75 drivers to bypass downtown – tore the neighborhood apart. The section that ran through the flower park opened in 1973, running north of I-75 to the east-west freeway of I-69 which passed just south of downtown.

The I-475 completely destroyed part of the flower park and separated the rest of the city center. Businesses have closed and buildings have been demolished, leaving land filled with rubbish that causes weeds to sprout. In 2014, one of the last remnants of the neighborhood, Clark Elementary School, built in 1913, was demolished, leaving the Golden Leaf as the only survivor of the flower park.

Opened in 1921 by Magnus Clark as Maple Leaf, the Golden Leaf is a member-owned club, with an annual cost of $ 85. Most of these members are black, but white members are welcome, and many events are open to the public, including an open mic night on Wednesdays and outdoor concerts in the side yard that have become popular during the pandemic.

The club survived urban renewal and survives COVID restrictions. The joint even survived Prohibition, with the music replaced by a pool hall and barber shop until the alcohol started pouring out again.

Ironically, decades of racism have helped the club thrive. In 1929, the Industrial Mutual Association, which provided health benefits to employees of Flint’s automobile manufacturers, built the Industrial Mutual Association auditorium in downtown Flint. It was the center of the city’s sporting and entertainment events until its last show was held in 1979.

For many years, whites attended evening events, with black patrons only allowed a second show after midnight.

In what she says was an inspirational moment, Reid immediately approached the manager and told him she wanted the job. She graduated and for the next two years managed the club and worked as a full-time operator before retiring.

The Flint Public Arts Project, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that has funded the creation of approximately 150 murals in Flint in recent years, is based in the Dryden Building in downtown Flint. At first glance, the concept of the Ornithology Jazz Club, a new musical destination in Brooklyn, sounds like an oxymoron.

Found smack in the middle of a neighborhood, Bushwick, generally known for its allegiance to EDM music, the only thing stranger than its feature is the Ornithology menu, which is entirely vegan.

And yet, a closer look behind the scenes of the place paints a much larger picture. The couple are no strangers to the jazz lifestyle: Mitchell opened Smalls, arguably one of Manhattan’s most iconic jazz clubs, in 1994. The duo moved to Bushwick in 2019 and, once the pandemic struck, created a non-profit organization to help jazz musicians find concerts in the city during troubled times and beyond. The Bordens then began hosting weekly jam sessions at the local LGBTQ-friendly bar Bodeguita and eventually purchased the space. They reopened it as Ornithology Jazz Club two months ago.

Typically, jazz clubs aren’t necessarily known for their food offerings, but at Ornithology, the fare is just as exciting as the music.

Customers can order a variety of sandwiches made by Matt Clifford Monday through Thursday, while Anthony James’ veggie burgers are available on Fridays and Saturdays. On Sundays, the on-site cooking is entrusted to a rotating group of chefs who present their unique dishes to the public. Here, the kitchen is also a stage.

This is how I ended up at the Ornithology Jazz Club, which occupies a shed in Bushwick which was only recently my favorite cocktail bar and the place I originally intended to visit. , Bodeguita.

I gave myself a moment to mourn the passing of my favorite island-themed queer bar, but I was also intrigued. A jazz club in Bushwick – an area best known for its DJs and EDM nights – was unexpected. Inside, the bones of the old bar were still there, and I recognized the bartender from Bodeguita. (A good sign). A grand piano occupied the center of the space while a small group played. I sat at the bar and took a look at the food menu which I was happy to see did not contain any animal products.

On paper, “The Bushwick Vegan Jazz Club” reads like a parody of itself, a Portlandia sketch made manifest. In fact, the space was warm and disarmingly delightful, somewhere where I saw myself spending many nights.

This is undoubtedly due to the experience of the founders of Ornithology, Rie Yamaguchi-Borden and her husband Mitchell Borden. For two decades, the couple have dedicated their lives to creating spaces where jazz musicians can come together while striving to keep those spaces accessible to new audiences. Mitchell founded Smalls in 1994, and the indescribable basement with a $ 10 blanket and alcohol-free quickly became a staple of jazz in the West Village, earning a reputation for nurturing upcoming talent. Fat Cat, its loudest cousin, opened nearby in 2000 and has found more fans. “We’re addicted to the lifestyle,” says Mitchell. “Whenever there is a big show, the people who enjoy it the most are the two of us.”

Mitchell and Rie moved from the West Village to Bushwick when Mitchell retired in 2019, and Rie started playing concerts on Thursday nights at their local bar, which happened to be Bodeguita. When the pandemic struck, the couple saw with their own eyes how the pandemic decimated businesses and robbed musicians of something crucial to their survival: spaces to play. In response, the husband-wife team founded Gotham Yardbird Sanctuary, a nonprofit that coordinates jazz performances throughout the city while ensuring respectable musician rates for the host venues. In December 2020, they started hosting a weekly jam session during Rie’s former Thursday night slot at Bodeguita.

“During the pandemic, I had a lot of time to train, and I thought, It should be the way of life of musicians and artists, explains Rie. “This could be the turning point in establishing a standard of compensation for musicians so that they can live their lives focusing on their art.”

This summer, the owner of Bodeguita approached the Bordens with an offer to sell the space. With no illusions about the harsh landscape of a still recovering city, the Bordens found partners – Mohammed Chrishti, the accountant of Gotham Yardbird Sanctuary, and his friend Ishmael Sierra – and officially opened the Ornithology Jazz Club in October.

The couple’s reputation means that the artists featured are big names in the jazz scene: New Orleans pianist Sullivan Fortner, guitarist Pasquale Grasso and Israeli-American bassist Omer Avital, to name a few. . Last Sunday, they handed over the cooking reins to Giselle Stamp, a Brooklyn native who runs a Dominican pop-up called Deadbeets. Rie and Mitchell weren’t sure if a jazz club would be received in Bushwick, but they knew they wanted to keep it accessible to the surrounding community. They do this by avoiding charging for a blanket and offering drinks at $ 10 or $ 12 apiece.
