Terry Seabrook’s quintet is invited to the Steyning Jazz Club

Club spokesman Colin Jilks said: “Shorter was one of Miles Davis’ most important sidemen and contributed many original songs to this quintet.

“He was a prolific songwriter throughout his career and wrote for every band he played in including: Art Blakey’s Messengers, The Miles Davis Quintet and Weather Report, as well as the bands he managed.

“Terry’s exceptional quintet will include: Andy Panayi, sax and flute; Robbie Robson, trumpet; Simon Thorpe, bass; Peter Hill, drums; and Terry Seabrook, piano.

The quintet is also playing new music inspired by Wayne Shorter in the form of Terry Seabrook’s A Shorter Suite, which was recorded and released in the fall of 2019.

“Terry Seabrook touts the versatility of the piano in its ability to represent harmony as well as powerful percussive rhythm, providing enormous scope for melodic inventiveness and composition.

“Coming from a musical background, his father playing the piano, Terry actually started the cello at the age of eight, then the violin a year later, and finally the piano at thirteen.

“Attending the University of Sussex, originally to study biology, he switched to music after a year as he spent far more time playing than studying science.

“He completed a degree in music and had the opportunity to visit the United States with one of the American universities organizing an exchange with Sussex.”

Colin added: “The bar service provided to the club by Riverside Brewery continues to serve a wide range of drinks.”

Doors open at 7:15 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m.

The Steyning Jazz Club meets at the Steyning Centre, Fletcher’s Croft, Steyning. BN44 3XZ.
